Is lightning protection required?

Yes, it’s a necessity, a prerequisite for insurance. There are different types of lightning protection for different facility depending on the amount of protection required and geographical location of the facility among others.

Will lightning ever strike the same place twice?

Yes! Lightning can strike the same place over time. It can happen during a single thunderstorm or in a thousand years, however, it will eventually happen.

Why does electronic equipment get damaged during a lightning storm?

Today’s technology is extremely sensitive; microprocessors have zero tolerance to overvoltage. During a lightning strike, the massive electromagnetic field is generated by inducing potential surge into any cable it finds to ground itself.

Isn’t the purpose of lightning protection to prevent lightning from striking?

What is a lightning protection system?

Lightning Rod Protection vs Charge Transfer Technology

A Lightning protection system is designed to protect a structure from damage due to a lightning strike. Lightning Eliminators and Consultant Inc, has been installing the best protection systems for every industry for over 40 years.

For over two centuries, lightning rod served as the primary means of protecting lives, electronic component and various other industrial assets. In this outdated lightning protection system, lighting rod is engineered to protect the structure in event of a lightning strike – the lighting will strike the rod and the conductor cables will carry the lightning current from the lightning rod to the ground through wires instead of passing through the structure. The heavy and long rods buried in the ground provide a safe path for lightning discharge.

Do you know with technology advancements in the lightning protection industry, lightning phenomena  can now be prevented?

LEC’s Charge Transfer System works by reducing the static charge, which builds upon the protected area without the use of a lightning rod. As the lightning downward leader is formed, it looks for opposite polarity to equalize itself. Our device interrupts the formation of these polarities thus eliminating the strike completely. The ionizer offers a medium for point discharge to occur, while the down conductors provide the electrical connection between the charge collector and ionizer. Interconnecting ground electrodes and conductors, the ‘charge collector’ collects and channels the electrical charge to the ionizer.

Traditionally, a lightning protection system includes lightning rods or air terminals, conductor cables, ground electrodes, utility bonding clamps and surge protection. Whereas our charge transfer system consists of one or more ionizers, down conductors, charge collectors.

Non Conventional Lightning Rods for Protection

Every industrial plant is struck by lightning at least once in several years. Thus Lightning rods are just as important as they have ever been and the lightning protection system is in common use today.

There are different types of solutions available today to protect a facility from lightning but it is a common misconception that they are variations of the same technology.

Three main types of lightning protection systems used today: conventional system, charge transfer system and early streamer emission air terminal systems.

Conventional lightning rod – invented by Benjamin Franklin; these rods attract a strike and convey the energy to the ground without damaging the building or facility. They are mounted on top of the buildings and electrically bonded to the ground.

Although lightning rod is the most commonly known form of conventional lightning protection system there have been a great number of technological advances.

Early streamer emission – this technology is very similar to the conventional lightning rod: it moves towards streamer generation and attracts lightning. The lightning rod can be distinguished due to its geometrically complex shape, the presence of a small object near the top and a discharge trigger.

Charge transfer technology – it takes a completely opposite approach to lightning protection: it prevents a lightning strike within a specified area designated for protection. The lightning rod or air terminal, in this case, collect the induced charge from thunderstorm clouds within the protected area and transfers it through an ionizer into the surrounding air. This results in relieving the imbalance between the cloud and ground and the strike are prevented.

As opposed to conventional lightning rods and early streamer emission, CTS is a better technology for various industries such as oil and gas, storage tank farms, all types of energy producers, etc. These facilities have many flammable and other sensitive materials, where using conventional lightning rod carries the risk of ignition or damage to various equipments.

Structural Lightning Protection beyond the Conventional Lightning Rod

For more than 200 years lightning rods have been used to collect and control the destructive powers of lightning. But now there has been a greater number of technological advancement in the lightning protection industry. So it not wise to allow thousand of amperes to flow near sensitive electronic equipment by installing a lightning rod.

This is primarily because Charge Transfer System is available to prevent a lightning strike from occurring altogether.

In very simple language, a lightning rod serves as a terminal to pull away harmful electrical current from structures directly inside the ground; whereas, CTS actually prevents the formation of lightning within a protected area.

Conventional lightning rods are very simple in design - they are just electrically conductive metal rod barely 10 in tall.

The DAS (Dissipation Array System) working under CTS technology has proprietary configurations and contains electrical charging configurations. They use fewer air terminals, bonds, and grounds and still provide a larger zone of protection. Unlike a lightning rod, this technology works to reduce the rapid transfer of electrons that occur with lightning into a slow drip by pushing storm-induced electric charge up into the atmosphere, away from the protected place.

Both, the lightning rod and Dissipation Array System initially operate off the same scientific principle known as point discharge. The similarities between them end here as their actions diverge. A lightning rod moves towards streamer generation whereas DAS utilizes a slow discharge process.
